The Girls' Friendly Society was founded in London in 1875 by an Irish woman - Mrs Elizabeth Townsend. She wanted to help lonely girls who came from the country to work in the city, It was and indeed to this day is a society of friendship and recreation in which all girls might share, bound together in a fellowship of Christian Love and service.
The organisation's purpose is to unite, for the glory of God in one fellowship of Prayer and service, all girls and women throughout the world, to promote friendship and uphold purity in thought, work and deed.
The Barnabees group meets weekly on Tuesday evenings from 6.45pm to 8pm in term time. It is intended for young people from 12 years to 16 years.

The Mothers' Union supports and encourages marriage and family life through prayer and community action
Mission Statement
The Mother's Union is
an Anglican organisation which promotes the well-being of families worldwide.
We achieve this by:
* developing prayer and spiritual growth in families.
* studying and reflecting on family life and its place in society.
* resourcing our members to take practical action to improve conditions for
families, both nationally and in the communities in which they live.
In 1876 Mary Sumner founded The Mothers' Union to give spiritual guidance and practical help to mothers and families. After 125 years it has grown into a worldwide Christian organisation with over three million members in 71 countries.
The St Barnabas branch of the Mothers' Union meets monthly on the last Thursday in the month at 2pm. For full programme of events, click here. The Local Co-ordinator is Enid Phillips who may be contacted by email
