Descriptive Plan of the East Window at St Barnabas
"If we believe we can experience our healing without deepening our hurt, we have understood nothing of the roots of our faith."
Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury
There are a number of very moving memorials to the dead of World Wars One and Two at St Barnabas. Perhaps the most is the unique large East Window who basic design was by Mr A G Moore, the lay reader at St Barnabas in the post WW1 period. The firm of H G Hillier and Co. of Seel St Liverpool completed the design and manufacture of the window. The lower portions of the window depicts members of the armed forces and mediaeval figures. The upper portion depicts Christ in Glory.
The War Memorial to the dead of WW1 at the West End of the Church contains the names of 43 parishioners of St Barnabas Parish Mossley Hill who were killed in action. These included two sons of the vicar, the J Kirk Pike, Harold Downey ( son of the churchwarden Mr D Downey) and Charles Buttery who had been a leader in Youth work. A separate Memorial near the entrance to the Vestry commemorates 33 members of the Baden Powell Scout Troop attached to St Barnabas Church who also killed in WW1.
