Mothering Sunday at St Barnabas Penny Lane
Mothering Sunday is a time when children thank their mothers for all they have done for them throughout the year. St Barnabas Parish Church, Mossley Hill celebrates this event with the children making small posies of flowers which they give to their mothers.
The celebration of Mothering Sunday has a long tradition in the Church. It falls on the Sunday half way through Lent which itself lasts from Ash Wednesday to the day before Easter Sunday, Holy Saturday. It has also been called "Refreshment Sunday" as the fasting rules through Lent were relaxed on this day in celebration of the "Feeding of the 5000" by Jesus.
